What can you do to help protect human health and the environment? Follow the CAPSAN 8 Step Program 1. Create a plan. Consider writing a mission statement - i.e. To Provide a cleaner, safer, healthy environment for all of the staff, students, and or patrons. Be sure and get feedback from the key leaders in your organization - teachers, students, parents and custodail staff. 2. Stop Dirt at the Door. Provide matting at all entrances. 80% of dirt comes from the outside. ![]() 3. Use Green Cleaning Products. Use environmetally-preferred cleaning products that have been certified by Green Seal, Eco Logo or Design for the Environment. Consider using a dilution control system if one is not currently in place. ![]() 4. Use Green Cleaning Equipment. Use green cleaning equipment such as high efficiency vacs that capture and contain microscopic materials. Check filter bags before each use.
5. Use Green Cleaning Processes. Chose procedures that have a minamal impact on the environment. Some examples are microfiber mops, microfiber cleaning cloths, eraser sponges, spraying the cleaning solution on the cloth rather than the surface. 6. Use Green Paper Products. At a minimum, follow the EPA procurememt guidelines for sanitary paper/tissue. ![]()
7. Use Green Can Liners. Follow EPA procurement guidelines for can liners / 10-100% post consumer content. 8. Recycling Program. Implement an effective recycling program. Paper, cans, bottles, plastics and cardboard should all be included. Make occupants responsible for seperating different types of refuse and include in the recycling program. ![]() |
